VERTS: Green Healing in Fort Collins

The People: Personal Growth and Creative Expression Above All Else

Upon arriving at Vert’s, a neighborhood dispensary in the heart of Fort Collins, I was instantly impressed by the amount of genuine hospitality. The manager, assistant manager and HR representative greeted us with a level of excitement I won’t soon forget, and made it emphatically clear how much they value the knowledge and passion coming from each and every Vert’s employee. They make a point to try and memorize the name of every customer who walks through the door. Unparalleled customer service and personal attention to medicinal detail are what makes this dispensary one of the most intimate and popular cannabis boutiques in the Fort Collins community.

APEX CANNABIS LIVES UP TO ITS NAME: Months-Old Rec Shop Makes Leaps and Bounds

Quality product and customer service is a standard at Apex Cannabis in Otis Orchards, Washington. On my first visit, I was immediately greeted with a welcome fit for a loyal patron of 25 years. Located off busy Trent Ave, Apex Cannabis awaits all of-age cannabis consumers.

The Place

A modern beacon within the industrial district of Otis Orchards, Apex Cannabis’ building has a beautiful discreetness to the exterior. The soft wood welcomes you with the warmth of a cabin in the woods. Once inside, the cedar-lined interior boasts multiple climate-controlled glass cases, all filled with impressive products for you to discover. With a non-UV lighting system, the cannabis contained in jars or Mylar won’t be affected by the cases’ light source, so your weed stays good and tight, not dry and flakey.

AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH: White Mountain Health Center

The White Mountain Health Center is a one-stop-shop that sits nestled at the base of the sun-soaked White Tank Mountains, just on the outskirts of Phoenix. A bit of a drive, but well worth the trip. And although Sun City is a retirement community, this award-winning dispensary has a lot of new tricks up its sleeve. A recent remodel made way for several additions, including a larger product floor, an express order desk, delivery service options and a new waiting area. They also decorated the space with portraits of cannabis advocates and cases of vintage apothecary bottles. Check-in was quick, easy and convenient.

White Mountain Health CenterJordan, my budtender, whisked me away and introduced me to an impressive selection of “patient-drivenproducts.” Their tiered flower system offers strains like GDP and AK47, and an outstanding selection of concentrates boasts options such as Van Gogh OG Shatter. Their high number of senior card holders means they offer a great array of topicals, tinctures and edibles. Brands include Baked Bros, GramsFX, Mary’s Medicinals, Green Halo, YiLo, Phoenix Apothecary and much more. They also offer their own line of edibles for the true confection connoisseur, such as their decadent 75mg truffles, famous 360mg chocolate brownie and mouthwatering 500mg butter cube!

Thanks to the knowledge and patience of the staff, I found what I was looking for—and perhaps a little more. It was clear that customer service and “making sure the patient is taken care of, and that their questions are answered,” is of the utmost importance here, as Jordan said. Fueled by the devotion of marijuana activist, inventor and owner, Butch Williams, coupled with years of research provided by Medical Director Dr. Sue Sisley, this Dispensary is a standout amongst the rest. I can’t wait to see what is on the horizon for the White Mountain Health Center.

NEW VANSTERDAM: Cannabis, Care, Community Engagement

The Business

New Vansterdam has established themselves as an innovative leader in the Washington cannabis industry since opening on July 11, 2014. They’ve accomplished this meteoric rise to success by focusing on being “a retail store that isn’t afraid to experiment,” according to Linda Chan, Operations Manager. An attitude which has helped them thrive amongst their many competitors in Clark County. Incorporating an online ordering system and a self-serve digital kiosk alongside in-store budtenders has created a streamlined system that gives customers multiple procurement options during their visit, allowing a “shopping experience for everyone.”

UNIQUE BOUTIQUE: A Look Inside The Herbal Cure

Pulling up to The Herbal Cure, you can’t help but be taken in by its abundant charm. An old train car sits in the parking lot, evidence of the shop’s past life as a lumber mill. Brandon, the owner, took me on a walk through the welcoming, cozy shop.

We looked through half the nearly two dozen strains on their shelves, including some of their award-winning Lemon Skunk and Frankenberry. Everything is organic, hand trimmed and grown in coco—a method many growers see as an effective middle ground between soil and full hydro processes. Upon seeing their results, I’m inclined to agree.

One of the highlights of The Herbal Cure is their relationship with Essential Extracts. The shop boasts fully stocked fridges of some of the cleanest solventless rosin I’ve ever seen from Nick Tanem, one of the premier extractors in Colorado.

BREEZE BOTANICALS: Bridging the Gap Between Herbal Medicine and Cannabis

Breeze Botanicals feels more like an Old-World apothecary than a typical dispensary. The shop entryway is lined with impressive displays of herbs and local products; a welcome sign celebrates the richness of Southern Oregon, explaining the philosophy of supporting local farmers and artisans, as well as the use of sustainable and organic practices.

Planting the Seed

Owner Brie Malarkey moved her family to Shady Cove in 2011, purchasing 40 acres with the goal of living off the land. She fell in love with the practice of using wild herbs for healing purposes, and created a line of herbal teas she began to sell at Farmers Markets. With Oregon’s passage of safe access legislation in 2014, combined with her vision of marrying the benefits of herbs and cannabis, Malarkey began crafting various herbal combinations. Breeze Botanicals was born.

Although The Mint Dispensary has only had its doors open for a few weeks, word on the street is that this is the place to invest in. The store is easy to find due to its convenient location, and the check-in process is quick and painless. The humble medical setting blended seamlessly with the retail floor as I was granted access to the clean-cut space. Well-lit and back-splashed by a vault door wall decal that opened to a fantasy landscape of cannabis fields, I felt right at home.

My budtender was knowledgeable, helpful and authentic—thanks, Bailey! It’s no wonder The Mint “went through 800 applications before finding the right people with the right attitude,” says owner Ray Molina, who understands the importance of having an educated and passionate staff. New to the industry, Ray and his partners are working towards building their iconic brand, while also delivering a unique experience that expands beyond the retail side of things. The dispensary has already added an express counter and has plans to pursue a fully functional kitchen, training center for law enforcement, patient care office and an on-site dab bar.

Located in Orange County’s capital city of cannabis, Bud and Bloom has brought a new level of sophistication to Santa Ana. The shop opened on Black Friday of 2016, and has quickly created a serious buzz in the community. The shop itself radiates with pure taste, from the naturally distressed wide-plank oak floors to custom craftsmanship, giving the collective an upscale and welcoming presence.
